Travelling With Your Vape: Everything you need to Know!

As the world begins to return to normality with the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions, more and more people are taking the opportunity to jet off on a long awaited holidays abroad. Whether you’ve just booked a last minute summer vacation or rescheduled a family holiday, you may find yourself wondering; how will vaping affect my travels?

If you’re one of the many vapors planning a getaway this year, it’s important to know the rules and regulations regarding vaping while travelling before you hit the road. We’re here to provide a full breakdown of everything you need to know by answering the most frequently asked questions regarding vaping on the go; covering airport regulations, vaping while flying and what you can and can’t take in your hand luggage. Read on to make sure your journey runs as smoothly as possible.

Can I vape at the airport?

Each airport in the UK enforces different rules and regulations surrounding the use of e-cigarettes on their premises, so it’s always best to check the airport guidelines before you set off.

In general, airport vaping rules often reflect the same rules that apply to smoking regular cigarettes. This means that vaping will only be permitted in certain designated smoking areas throughout the airport premises, and these tend to be located in a small outdoor area.

Depending on which airport you’re flying from, you may only be able to vape in the outer perimeters of the airport. This means that once you’ve passed through security and entered the terminal, vaping is no longer permitted.

However, some airports have installed secure designated smoking areas beyond the security check-in, allowing you to vape right up until it’s time for boarding, but these are few and far between so you should check the airport guidelines to avoid disappointment.

Can I vape on a plane?

Unfortunately, much like smoking, vaping is banned on all commercial airlines. Although vaping doesn’t emit the same harmful chemicals as regular cigarettes, airlines have made it clear that the same rules apply to vaping when flying.

If you’re due to set off on a long-haul journey and are concerned about dealing with nicotine cravings during the flight, we recommend looking into some other alternatives such as nicotine gum or patches to keep you covered until you arrive at your destination.

While it may seem tempting to try to get away with discreetly puffing away on your e-cigarette or vape on the plane, we strongly recommend against it. Not only will you be breaking airline rules, but you put yourself at risk of landing a hefty consequence as certain airlines issue fines for smoking and vaping while on board.

Can I take my vape in my hand luggage?

Yes! Although you’re not allowed to use your vape while you’re in the air, you’re able to pack it in your hand luggage and keep it in the cabin during the flight. In fact, most airlines don’t allow you to put vaping products in your checked luggage that’s stored in the hold, so it’s always best to keep it in your carry-on bag to avoid problems.

Regardless of whether you plan on taking a small disposable vape or a whole vape kit, your e-cigarettes and any electronic vaping equipment such as replacement batteries should be packed in your hand luggage. This is because e-cigarettes are powered by lithium-ion batteries, which are banned from checked luggage as they’re a potential fire hazard.

Can I take e liquid on a plane?

Fortunately, you won’t have to worry about dashing straight to the nearest vape shop to stock up on juice when you arrive at your destination, as you’re allowed to bring your own e-liquid on the plane.

However, it’s important to note that any e-liquid that you plan on storing in your hand luggage should not exceed 100ml and you must declare it along with any other liquids you’re carrying. If you plan on taking more than 100ml of vape juice with you on your trip, this will need to be stored with the rest of your belongings in your checked luggage that’s stored in the hold of the aircraft.

There is one more thing to note regarding taking vapes and e-liquids on a plane. Airport security staff may request that any disposable vapes and prefilled vape pods are placed in the clear liquids bag. This is simply because these vape products contain e-liquid, which is classed alongside other liquids and thus subject to the same rules.

Can I take my vape anywhere?

Many countries, much like the UK, allow the use of vapes and view e-cigarettes as an acceptable and effective smoking cessation aid. However, there are certain countries that have regulations in place surrounding the use and sale of vaping products.

Some countries have even outright banned the use of e-cigarettes, including Thailand, where the use of vaping products has been banned since 2014.We recommend checking the laws in place surrounding the use of vapes in your holiday destination before you set off to avoid problems and disappointment.
